Discussion boards are a fascinating mix of things. They certainly invite opinions - some are extreme (Israelis probably view mine in this light), some balanced, some borderline psychotic - but a good moderator without an agenda can easily filter out the out-and-out nutters, the racists and other genuine bad boys and girls. Discussion boards are, however, also a wonderful source of valuable information. I can remember one contributor, possibly on this Talkback, providing a link to the Sunburn cruise missile, whose existence I was unaware of, and of which Iran now has a large stock. Do they change minds? Who knows? My own feeling is that they probably do not. In arguing a case we probably all become more entrenched in our opinions. The one danger with Talkbacks is excessive censorship. Once they become vanilla, they tend to die. Haaretz`s Talkbacks have the feel of the Wild West about them, with a hefty dose of the surreal too. This makes them very enjoyable. |
