Bradley Burston: Why can't Jews and Palestinians make peace?

The fault is largely ours. We simply lack the will to take the necessary steps to make peace. The palestinians, of course, also need to take some painful steps: recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, abandoning the so-called "right of return, accepting a demiltarzed status, etc. But, we need to accept an end to the settlement enterprise, to return most nearly all of the west bank, to remove settlements that extend into arab lands, and to accept a compromise on Jerusalem. It is clear these are things we are as yet unwilling to do. No one here has the guts to face up to the settler movement or u to the fanatical religeous right. Land has become more important than peace. The palestinians under moderate arab direction are more likely to accept their obligations...albeit, perhaps, because of their more desperate situation.
