| "Perhaps he will discover during the time he spends here that the Israeli occupation is more brutal than he believed, that the only key to peace is in ending the occupation, that an authority under occupation has no real institutions and that he must talk to everyone, even Hamas." Blair must talk to real people in the Occupied Territories. He must talk to Hamas. He must talk to Syria. It would be nice if he met Barghouti. If he doesn`t do these things - if he talks only to the Israeli Uncle Tom, Abbas, he`ll fail. He must shake off the perception that he is Blair`s poodle, that he is "Israel`s friend" (what a kiss of death that was from Olmert) and must establish himself as an honest broker. Perhaps Blair will want only to schmooze with comfortable "friends". Perhaps he`ll settle for an ego-flattering strut on the Middle East stage. We`ll see. The test will be who Blair insists on meeting. |
