"There is a growing consensus in Israel that a withdrawal from the West Bank is no longer possible....Everyone shares this conclusion" What amazes me is the total myopia of Israel. The Israelis seem blinkered, capable of only seeing their backyard. They appear unable to see that the shape of the Middle East is radically changing, and that the future will be very different from the past. The Iraq War has transformed the geopolitics of the region. America has been mortally wounded by the war, and its ability to deal with a bigger threat, that of the Ayatollahs of Iran, has been destroyed. The coming years will see a spectacular rise in the power of Iran, including the acquisition of a nuclear deterrent, and in every country, from Egypt to Lebanon to Jordan to Saudi Arabia the forces of Islamic extremism will take over. The cost of not settling with the Palestinians on favourable terms, when they could, will be future cataclysmic war.
