It seems to me that it is most and foremost the Israeli government (regardless which party was at the helm) that fooled everyone.
They fooled the settlers into believing that they could build a lasting future in Gaza. They fooled the Palestinians by presenting Oslo as a way to peace, while in reality is was nothing more than a ploy to "change facts on the ground" and to strenghten the occupation.
And they fooled the world by pretending that their goal was peace and not "Greater Israel".
Not all, but many of the settlers were not "nice" people. I have seen them in action myself during several visits to the WB and Gaza. But that does not negate the fact that they were used as (albeit willing) pawns by their government. Now the pawns have been sacrificed to allow the annexation of the more desirable areas of the WB. Sharon and other Israeli government officials have clearly stated that this is their goal.
If anyone still wants to believe that such intentions will lead to peace, they are only fooling themselves. |
