Of course we should be expending every effort to make this a better world now, for the only window of causation we have access to is now. And of course speculating on precise dates for the coming of the messiah is counterproductive?especially because we really don?t know. But only going about doing good and leaving all the philosophy up to the materialists also spells disaster. We all die and nothing that we build is permanent?unless there is a world to come and a resurrection of the dead and all the good things foretold by Israel?s prophets. Isn?t this how the Rambam concludes his 13 principles? ?I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah; and even though he may tarry, nonetheless I wait every day for his coming,? and ?I believe with perfect faith that there will be a revival of the dead at the time when it shall please the Creator, blessed be His name, and His mention shall be exalted for ever and ever.?

Newton was a visionary and as such he gave us enormous potential to improve our world. I suggest that without that kind of vision?with only the utilitarianism of materialist humanism?the people perish.
