Once again I have arrived here way too late. Unfortunately, the story in Ha`aretz does not give any background on Mikey Weinstein (also of Albuquerque). A few years ago, as a graduate of the Air Force Academy, with a son currently in attendance there, he sued for discrimination, because cadets were being harrassed by not only military chaplains and instructors, but also fellow cadets. As a result, some things were changed, but not enough.
In a different strain of racial/ethnic bias, members of a National Guard unit from New Mexico serving in Iraq were required to strip down to their underwear in a search for "gang-related" tattoos, because the majority of them were Hispanic. The commander of that unit lodged complaints with the military and, eventually, an army general issued an apology. However, the commander who complained does not expect to receive a promotion.
Yup. Discrimination is alive and well in the US. |
