If Peres is promising to herald in a higher standard in Beit Hannassi - he must start by rejecting dictates by extremist religious zealots who were never elected to anything.
While Shas` support might help Peres win the presidency - accepting not a mere endorsement, but an `order` to vote for him - should be anathema to a real statesman.
