| By and large, I agree with this article although certain aspects of it - such as what Saddam firing missiles at Israel or Hamas firing Quassams have to do with anything - escape me. The problem, it seems to me, is that by boycotting any and all aspects of Israeli society - including those that have nothing to do with the occupation, such as Israeli academia - you send the message that it is not merely the Occupation that is wrong;it is also all of Israel that is "wrong". It is not that boycotts don`t work; it is that they should specifically target the evil in question. This, boycotting anything associated with the settlers seems like a good idea to me; boycotting Israeli academia is not only wrong-headed but also counterproductive because it reinforces the (incorrect) right-wing notion that "they all hate us" and want to destroy us. |
