Of course Baschar Assad is a despotic leader. As much as Saddam Hussein did in Iraq or Hosni Mubarak still does in Egypt, he holds down every form of opposition against his regime.
But the enemy of my enemy may not need to be my friend. One portion of those opposed against secular dictators are Muslim Brothers. Spreading democracy in the Middle East would immediately turn out to be a "Machtergreifung" for the Muslim Brotherhood, and the world would soon have to learn that there is no peace with Islam as they preach it. |
