As Slezkine argues compellingly in this book, one of the primary elements of modernity has been the transformation of each nation-state into a "chosen" nation with a mystical "Jerusalem" at its center and a "holy tongue" as its language. That the British see themselves in similar terms is part of the process of peoples adopting the methods of existence the Jews have had for millenia.
