| as a very regular visitor to israel, i always rent a car. the reasons for the high rate of traffic accidents is more than obvious to me..... 1) drivers generally are on the handheld phone in the car, and preferably have a cigarette in the other hand 2) drivers drive in the middle of the highway, even at low speed. they have no intention taking the right lane if asked for with light signals 3) drivers steer their cars with visible lack of understanding of what is happening around them. if they are not (exceptionally) on the phone, they hang in their seats and talk and look to their passenger 4) the majority of drivers seem to have a better knowledge of riding a camel than driving a car 5) remarkably many young women sit with their nose on the steering wheel, leaving their arms no room to steer nor move 6) i very rarely have seen a driver looking in the back mirror 7) it is striking how uninvolved driving instructors are in what their students are doing.
