Shlomo Avineri : Until they accept responsibility
Talkback
Title:Not a matter of blaming the victims!

Saying that this piece is "blaming the victims" is another way to avoid taking responsibility for starting a war that could easily have gone the other way - the Yishuv and later, Israel, were the intended victims.

There has got to be some recognition of this fact. Otherwise there can be no movement forward, no growth and no reconciliation.

Avineri is right about this. An opportunity was squandered in the 1930`s and 1940`s and it didn`t just happen: violence was instigated - a civil war and then an international war involving several states were deliberately started by the Arabs.

The fact that this happened right after WWII, when the Jewish people were in an absolutely desperate condition, blockaded and humiliated by the British on top of the devastation of the holocaust, only made the struggle that much more acute.

Nobody gave Israel much of a chance to survive.

Isn`t it time to look clearly and fully at the past, in order to forgive each other and ourselves?
