Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz Correspondent : State refusing to recognize 'pop over' conversions despite court order

It is hard to understand the state`s stance on conversion of Israeli residents, in light of the fact that Conservative and Reform converts from abroad are accepted as Jews and welcomed under the right of return.

This seems to be yet another attempt by the Orthodox community in Israel to maintain hegemony over conversion within Israel: more about reducing the power of the local Reform and Conservative rabbis than about determining the sincerity of individual converts.

How petty.
