In 1965 my cousin and I travelled from Albany, N.Y. to New York City to see Sandy Koufax pitch against the Mets. Unfortunately, he only lasted 2 1/3 innings. I remember him walking off the mound heading towards the visitors` dugout. It seemed as though he stared into our eyes to say he was sorry that he had "let us down". Of course, the opposite was true. We considered it an honor to have been there to witness one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game. By the way, that was the last game that Sandy Koufax ever pitched in Shea Stadium. |
