After all, Olmert *is* a politician, so it does not pay to take his comments at face value.
He may be saying this for a specific reason; maybe he *knows* that the USA has just ruled out a military strike, leaving him with the problem of how to deflate the Israeli expectation that Iran is going to be smacked down by the all-powerful GWB.
Expectations that he has, of course, been raising for the last year.
One way is to say, quite casually, "yeah, Iran can be smacked down. Of course. All it will take is 1,000 cruise missiles and a bit of luck".
To which a suddenly-sobered Israel responds "You have GOT to be kidding!! ONE THOUSAND? And that still may not do the job???"
And then the sound of expectations being suddenly deflated, and it isn`t OLMERT`s fault; it`s the Israel population itself that gets the cold feet.
That`s if he`s a canny politician in the know.
The alternative is he is a conniving Israeli politician on the make.
Tough one to pick, that! |
