Yoav Stern and Shahar Ilan, Haaretz Correspondents, and AP: Bishara suspected of aiding enemies during Second Lebanon War
Talkback
Title:To Rami #10
Name:Curious Jew
City: Ramat GanState: Israel
Rami, you say that most Israeli Arabs are loyal to Israel. I`ll grant that most are good and law-abiding citizens, but what reason has Israel given it`s Arab minority to be loyal? And, if there is a patriotic feeling towards the state, why don`t more Arabs serve in the army? Would most Israeli Arabs feel betrayed if the state tried to cede their towns to Palestine and make them Palestinian citizens in the context of a peace agreements which protected their economic rights in Israel? I think that most Israeli Jews, besides hearing Bishara`s and other Arab MK`s Nasserite or "We are Palestinians and Israel`s existence is a tragedy" declarations from time to time, are completely ignorant about how Israeli Arabs build their identity, feel about Israel, and about the Jewish national home idea that is so important to Israeli Jews. I`m hoping you will write some more and enlighten us a bit.
