Yes, Will equal rights are supposed to come with equal responsibility. However, the fact is in Israel, Palestinians who are Israel citizens do not have the same or even equal rights as Jewish citizens of Israel.
There are around 17 laws, indirect and direct which discriminate against Palestinians with Israeli citizenship.
For example, while technically all Isareli citizens are suppose to engage in military service, there are exemptions. The Israeli state has willing exempted Palestinians with Israeli citizenship (yes, they are Palestinians, not "just" Arabs) because they did not want them in the Israeli military. Yeshiva students are also allowed exemption, as are women.
The difference, however, is that while Yeshiva religious students and women are exempted from the miliary they are still allowed to access programs and recieve benefits in relation to schooling, education, housing, land and jobs.
Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, who do not serve in the military, however, are denied these same benefits.
So where is the equality in that - if one group of Israeli citizens (in this case Jewish) can be exempted and recieve state benefits, why is the other group of Israeli citizens (Palestinians and Muslims) denied them?
Palestinians with Israeli citizens, do pay their taxes, however, numerous studies have shown (and the Israeli govt has admitted this themselves), that they are not afforded the same educational facilities, programs or courses. They are also denied the same land rights or the same citizenship rights. |
