| It is painful because the land was stolen so long ago that many good people have built their lives around the reality that it offers (not all settlers are bad and I`m willing to bet that not many people in Ma`ale Adumim consider themselves settlers), a reality not too removed from the kind of difficulties Australia would go through if it returned all the land stolen from the Aborigines or the kind the USA would go through if it had to return all the land taken from the Native Americans (stolen, conquered or otherwise bought through deceit). A marked difference is that you were "smart" enough to kill off practically all your indigenous peoples with bloodbaths like the Caledon Bay Crisis. So I`ll tell you what I tell everyone: We have to find a practical solution that will create a Palestinian state without destroying (de facto) the existing Israeli state. Dismantling Ariel and Ma`ale Adumim would not destroy Israel but it is not viable economically. A (fair) land swap is the way to go. |
