| I have noticed that too. Western jews are so consumed with hiding or downplaying their jewish identity that it often borders on self-hatred. They bash Israel only to show the "liberal nature" and to appear less jewish (Chomsky and others). I am not jewish but am very proud of Israel and its people, so its even more surprising for me to hear these western jews downplay importance and necessity of Israel not only to the Jewish people but to the entire Western world. I often tell my jewish friends to be proud of their culture, history and contribution to the world. This desparate desire to belong and assimilate just looks like the lack of strong sense of identity. In contrast Israelis I`ve met have a strong sense of jewishness, pride of their culture and history. Haven`t western jews learned anything from centuries of persecution - that the only way to survive is by maintianing a strong sense of community, identity and values. |
