Israel`s policy of bantustanising the Palestinians is doomed to eventual failure. This is because the individual sub-groups of Palestinian society benefit from belonging to the wider Arab and Islamic nation. Once the dust settles down on the Israel/Palestine issue, the tendency for these sub-groups will be to gravitate towards this higher level of belonging.
Israel on the other hand doesn`t have the advantage of natural membership of a greater national/religious grouping. Some may argue that she belongs to the "western" group of nations, but that is true only to an extent, and only while the declining US agrees to maintain Israel under its wing.
Benvenisti is wrong when he says that these groups have yielded to a policy of divide & rule. Rather, they are tackling real world challenges on different fronts, each needing a slightly different approach. |
