Dear Yaakov: Tragically, the Irena Sendlers and other brave Poles were far too few. That is why many Jewish people from Poland cannot forget the inaction or actual persecution by many of the Poles, their former neighbors, even though the reason for not aiding the Jews was fear of reprisal from the Nazis. My parents narrowly escaped being hanged when the Nazis randomly chose nine victims as punishment for the killing of a German soldier by a Polish resistance fighter. They had to listen as the bodies of their friends banged all day against the walls of the building where they were doing forced labor. It just goes to prove that it is easier to be frightened than to be good. |
