| AIPAC is widely called the "Israel lobby" and it actually encourages the use of this blanket moniker. This is, however, a misnomer: AIPAC is in fact the "Likud lobby" and as such it is supported by America`s more reactionary Jews, the neocon elite and, of course, Bible-thumping Christians. Happily, the Jewish contingent of this motley crew represents only a tiny slice of American Jewry, which is historically progressive, humanistic and secular. The IFP reflects the ideals of mainstream American Jews. Still, the majority of American Jews, while frustrated by Israel`s behavior toward the Palestinians, cannot bring themselves to openly condemn their Israeli coreligionaries. Darfur, then, is a surrogate for Palestine; by advocating for humanity in Darfur, American Jews are salving their guily consciences over the tragedy being wrought in Gaza and the Occupied Territories. |
