| It was once said of the 19th century Balkans that they produced more politics than they could digest. Maybe Israel produces more religion than it can digest. After all, the pre-Roman Jewish states were only notable for religion. Commercially and politically they had a poor track record compared to many much more successful countries of the ancient world. Modern Israel if it is to survive has to succeed as a normal country, but once again, modern Israel is becoming more notable for religious issues and conflict than commercial or political success. Being a modern western state isn`t compatible with having a modern Sanhedrin handing out death sentences, but then maybe being a modern western state isn`t compatible with being stuck isolated in the Middle East. After all the irony is that while many original Zionists may have had a secular vision, Israel is only located where it is because of religion. |
