The EU has always been consistant and clear about its support for both the security and sovereignty of the state of Israel. The EU as a political entity is there to provide a common framework for political stability (and increasingly foreign policy) and economic growth. In both areas is has (over the long term) been a resounding success. Given the Levant has so many echoes of Europe in 1914 - nationalism, religion, militarism - an explosive mix. Israel, it would seem, is in despe rate need such a famework that the EU could provide if it is to prosper in the future and as such it has much to gain from closer ties with the union.
That individual nations within the EU don`t subscribe to the Israeli Weltansicht you seem to subsribe to is not the EU`s fault.
I completely agree that when it comes to fighting anti-semitism the EU could be a lot more assertive, as it should about racism and xenophobia in general. |
