It seems to me that the Israeli are aware of the importance of this site to muslims, and it is clearly an issue on which they should show maximum flexibility and restraint. They should bend over backwards to include muslims in the work so that they can see that nothing untoward is taking place. Banning muslims from the site is likely to cause nothing but suspicion and trouble. Israel should cease work until everyone is entirely happy with what is planned. There should be co-operation rather than confrontation. Israel can afford to bend on this occasion. |
