There are indeed many parallels between Zionism and Apartheid: It was certainly no coincidence that the latter came in force in 1948. Apartheid was realpolitik hiding behind the same religious arguments underpinning Zionism. Certainly many crimes were commited in its name, including oppression of millions of of people, extrajudicial killings of political opponents, covert and overt dirty trick operations both inside the country and abroad etc. But to equate Apartheid with Zionism is simply a horrendous insult not only to past and present Palestinian suffering, but also to white South Africans. Do you really think a peaceful settlement had been possible at all in South Africa had the white minority treated their black countrymen the way Jewish immigrants treated the local population? |
