For me a success of Carter was moving the framework of debate over Is/Pal from `The War on (Islamic) Terror`, a good thing in the eyes of Americans and nice for Israel to surf, to Apartheid, a bad thing in the eyes of Americans and offensive to their world-renowned sense of fairness, particularly given their own slave history. It affected how they saw themselves.
Lipstadt is undoubtedly right to say the Holocaust explains much of Israel`s current behaviour. But whether or not you think it actually justifies it may depend on whether or not you are Jewish. In effect, Carter`s use of the word Apartheid makes people stop thinking `We are all Jews now`.
It;s good for Israel - the occupation doesn;t help the country`s soul and it`s debatable how it will help deal with Iran. |
