One of the protesters demanded, "rules similar to those at work in the United States." In the United States, in most jurisdictions at least, Deadly force is NEVER permitted in defense of property with the exception of one`s house. Even then the exception is very narrow and filled with caveats. Under the old commonlaw rule, one can only shoot an intruder if one believes that one is about to be the victim of a violent crime or arson AND if they have already exhausted all other methods of deterence. The Model Penal Code in the US only allows for shooting an intruder to your house. In this case, he broke into the Ranch not the house. He should be tried and convicted if the facts bear out.

Also, I am a little concerned about the potential racial motivation behind this. I suspect that had the farmer shot a Gadna participant "breaking into his ranch" he would not find this sort of support.

Remember, this is the middle of the Negev, not near the occupied territories.
