Shame be upon Israel for any ill treatment of Imam Fawaz Damra. Damra is a decent family man, who was arrested and expelled from America, essentially guilty of hurling insults at Jews -- TEN or more years ago. There is no point in interrogating Damra NOW about whatever non-relationship he may have had with Islamic Jihad years ago.
When Damra first came to America he was angry, and acted as spokesperson against "Jews", but since then committed to working for interfaith justice and peace. Normal societies do not punish people endlessly for insulting words.
Damra has already lost his home, congregation, and for all practical purposes, lost his family as well.
I met Fawaz Damra only once, when he thanked me for being an advocate in the silly legal witchhunt against him. It my Jewish sense of justice, combined with normal common sense, that calls to me again. Jeez, let the poor guy alone!! |
