Howdy Mr. Alon Liel;
I can appreciate that you are obviously opposed to capital punishment on general principles, but that was the worst argument for banning the death penalty that I`ve ever heard. In the first place, the U.S. had nothing to do with it. Saddam Hussein was tried, convicted, and executed by Iraqis and not by Americans. The only embarrassing part came when the Iraqi executioners taunted Saddam during his final moments--that was unprofessional.
I`m not sure about your claim that "most" democratic nations have a constitutional prohibition of capital punishment. Certainly, that`s true in Europe, but what about the democracies in Latin America, Africa, and Asia? Although seldom employed, the death penalty is still on the books in Israel too.
I doubt if very many people will remember Saddam Hussein a few years down the road anymore than they remember that Romanian dictator, Choucescu (Sp?), who was executed in 1991(?) and then the Romanians banned the death penalty. |
