This case has been known for some time. As for what influence the pope could have had on Hitler and his Nazi machine, it is doubtful any, in terms of policy change. Hitler felt Christianity was nothing but a Jewish perversion. In terms of morality it would have been momentous. What role, if any,did Pius XII have in promulgating the statement from the Dutch Catholic bishops condemning the deportation of Dutch Jews, read from the pulpits on two consequetive Sundays of all Catholic churches, and banning Catholics from joining the NSB party (Dutch pro-Nazis)? The Nazis responded by rounding up so called "non-Aryan" Catholics, such as St. Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and thousands of other such Catholics and deporting them to Aushwitz.
