The leading Halachic authority of the conservative movement, Rabbi Joel Roth is forcefully AGAINST same-sex marriage or the religious - not civil - acceptance of homosexuality as an alternative sexual behaviour. Apparently those in favour of a pro-homosexual position are a significant number. Conclusion, a split is absolutely inevitable unless the knowledgeable halachists convince their opponents that indeed they will lose more in the long run than they will gain. Having said that, the question is will such a split INEVITABLY lead to the death of the movement, or not? My own view from an orthodox perspective is that the movement will be unviable - because it will be indistinguishable from the Reform movement. It will lose whatever little credibility it still has in Israel and in North America among middle-of-the-road traditionalists. Only time will tell whether this will be "good" or "bad" for the Jews. |
