| Conservatives can have BOTH human rights AND halakha. Homosexuality is a fact of life. It requires normal halakhic debates, just like any other fact of life. Sexuality is one of the most powerful and inalienable qualities of being human. It cant go away, and it cant be ignored. Homosexuality is about love, relationships, couples, and families. There is nothing "private" about homosexuality. In halakha, references to "shokhev zakhar" actually prohibit anal sex only. They dont prohibit homosexuality. The Conservative Movement can simply clarify that gay male couples are kosher, but should avoid anal sex (like straight couples should avoid anal sex). Other forms of male-male sex such as frot (rubbing genitals together) are fine ways to celebrate intimacy. Thus Conservatives stay true to both Jewish tradition and basic human rights to love and be loved and to have a family life. |
