| Another example of why religious government doesn`t work. These guys say that orthodox judaism is the only real thing, but they can`t even decide whose right among their many varied sects. Some will not even talk to each other. The rabbinate tried to block american orthodox conversions once before, because of their paranoia. Other rabbis just decided to create a new sanhedrin. I guess they looked around and decided that they were the wisest rabbis in the world. Many very well educated jews disagree with them, however. Non-orthodox jews are not necessarily stupid or lazy. Many just don`t believe that the Bible is perfect, or that ancient rabbinic opinions are binding today. I believe that there are many valid views of judaism, so we should find a new way to define what a jew is. I will never accept the authority of people who dress like it`s 17th century Poland in Jerusalem, and who think the enlightenment was a mistake! |
