I can understand why Israelis are anxious at the thought of nuclear weapons in the hands of a regime that combines eliminationist rhetoric with Holocaust denial. I can also understand why this stirs painful memories of the 1930s and 40s.

But the comparison with the Third Reich can be misleading. Hitler`s Germany was the most powerful country in the world militarily and the second most powerful industrially. In contrast, Iran (like Israel and Turkey) is just one of a group of medium weight regional powers operating in a multi-polar global system
