in the first place what the electric company did was against the law so that is why the executive responsible was fired. second, the level of anti-haredi hatred is frightening. to the writer who claims the haredim don`t pay for electricity, what is your source? of course they pay for it like everyone else.
they also work and pay taxes and are citizens of the state like the non-religious and in a democracy are allowed to express their views.
the last point is that Israel is, after all, a Jewish state and for the jewish people, shabbos has been a central value for several thousand years. certainly individuals can behave as they please but the state needs to respect long held jewish values. think of it this way, what is israel`s justification for existence if not as a jewish state? if not based on jewish history, then the nation really is just a colonial outpost. |
