Assad is not worried about any potential threats from troop movements in the Golan.
He is trying to keep the issue of Israel returning the Golan going .. if everybody thinks he is scared then he has a good reason to support hezbollah and Iran to defend him from big bad Israel.
He can also say look Israel having the Golan is a thrreat to Syria but this can all be solved by Israel giving us the Golan and I will give Israel a piece of paper saying that we now have peace.
Assads political career is under threat both in and outside Syria so he wants to keep Israel and the Golan in the news it diverts attention from his own failings inside Syria and when he calls for peace it makes him look like a man of peace and he can ask the international community get Bush to take Syria of the axis of evil and instead preasure Israel into giving up the Golan and give all kinds of other rewards Assad because he is a peacemaking visionry. |
