The article at one point says,
"On the Israeli side, this would mean a cabinet decision on whether to bring the treaty to a vote in the Knesset. On the Palestinian side, if the PLO accepts the treaty document, it would be submitted for ratification by a referendum of the Palestinian people"
Can you explain why in Israel the decision would come from the very few appointees, whereas in Palestine-to-be, A referendum of the people ?
Why not do a referendum wthin Israel? Israel has it`s own corruption at high levels, where stodgy old generals call the shots.
The suggestion is that we cannot trust the nascent palestinian government, and yet we can accept the current right-wing government (disguised as centrist) as a legitimate representation of the Israeli wishes ?
why not go all the way. This small phrase subtly smacks of "we`re the civilized ones, you can trust *OUR* governemnt" |
