One of the most constructive things that Jordan ever did for the Palestinians was to envision, from a Muslim perspective, a just Middle East that included the Jewish state of Israel.
Nothing has screwed the Palestinians more than the hard core rejectionism of Israel that most Arab leaders took from the 1920`s through the mid 1970`s.
Jordan`s ability to recognize that the Jews are an integral part of Middle East should be lauded.
Those who do not acknowledge Jewish history have a very difficult time accepting Israel as a natural element of the region not as an invader`s foothold.
It is a sick circle, but the Palestinians will get nothing until they accept Israel. The Palestinians won`t accept Israel until they can envision a just future for themselves. It is the Jordanian perspective that bridges this gap and provides the trust to break the cycle. |
