This is a fight that has been going on for decades. The Roma ask to be recognized for their suffering in the Holocaust, and the world tells them that there is hardly any proof that they suffered because of ethnic, rather than social persecution, This by the way is the reason gays will never be compensated - because in their extermination, they were likened to criminals. Of the Roma population, only a fraction were singled out as ethnic gypsies - the rest were considered social deviants. Those with eight notable gypsy ancestors were considered true roma (even more stringent than the policy on jews) while the rest were criminals.
I wish the Roma the best in luck gaining recognition for their suffering. Lord knows they were treated as badly as the Jews (in incomparable ways). Lord also knows Europe would be nothing without Jews or Gypsies. |
