The Roma originated in north India, and were sold by the Maharaja to the Persian prince to act as joyful minstrels to cheer the downtrodden Persian workers.
The Roma are a true wandering people, who in India were a social, not ethnic group, metal working untouchables. Their identity as distinct from other Indian untouchables began in their journey.
The Jews were wanderers who originated in Israel. Their identity began in Israel. Their traditions stemmed from their wandering.
The Roma deserve the freedom for nomadic lifestyle, and deserve the freedom to escape ethnic persecution. Do not, even, jokingly, try to limit these freedoms. |
