Bernadotte left a diary about his experiences in the Middle East which was published many years ago. What is so striking and yet goes almost unnoticed is that almost immediately after Bernadotte became UN mediator he became convinced that the Mandate was unworkable and that a more prudent policy to follow would be one that served British imperial interests.
The assassination of Bernadotte was the single most important factor that nearly led to Bernadotte`s proposals being approved. It would have been a disaster for Israel`s interests. What saved the day for Israel was the rejection of Bernadotte`s proposals by the Arab political leadership. |
