I have been trying to find out just what ever happened to Santa Rosa plums for a couple of years now. Ironic that I would find out in an article from an Israeli newspaper.
The produce managers at all my favorite grocerie have been totally at a loss about this. A while back I saw something at AJ`s that said Santa Rosa plums, but they were white inside -- yuk! For a while this summer we were getting a variety of pluot that was something like the old Santa Rosa plums, but still not the same and not as good.
I guess it`s just like everything else -- tasteless tomatoes, apples and peaches with thick, astringent skins, mangoes that never seem to get ripe. Everything is bred for the way it looks and how long it will last on the shelf. How it tastes isn`t the least bit relevant.
And another thing that seems to have completely disappeared: those dried figs from Greece or Turkey that had a straw string running through them and were packaged in in a clear wrap - where are they? |
