In 1967 Israel attacked Egypt after Nasser amassed his army at the border and evicted UN troops guarding the border. Oh, and did we forget Syria, which also amassed its troops on Israel`s northern border? It was very clear to Israel`s, Egypt`s and Syria`s leadership that this conflict would determine the continued existence of the state of Israel.
A decade later, under different leadership, Egypt received all of the Sinai back in exchange for recognition of Israel`s borders. 1967 would not have happened were it not for Nasser. Israel demonstrated that by its willingness to undo its military gains. |
