To those who claim that jews were tolerated but not well treated in Egypt, here is my experience: As an engineering student at Alexandria Univ. (1953-1958), my best friend was an egyptian jew (for confidentiality I only give his last name--Arditi). We studied together and visited often. During the 1956 war perpetrated by Israel-France-England, it never crossed my mind that my friend was anything but an Egyptian. We graduated together (he was first in class and I was second). That was in 1958, two years after Yoav Stern claim that Nasser had explelled all the jews from Egypt in 1956.
People do not understand that in the early 50s Egypt was coming from under the British occupation and there were lots of foreigers(Greek, French, Italian, etc) who were born and lived in Egypt but never assimilated in the society, speaking their own languages and never becoming citizens. These people were mostly the ones Nasser expelled. I remember my friend fondly and wonder what became of him. |
