| There are already some suggestions for guidelines, many of which tend in a direction that I disagree with. Banning the past, banning words like "ethnic cleansing", banning the view that Israel shouldn`t be a Jewish state, ... -- these are all examples of preventing people from freely expressing their views. That the past shouldn`t be put aside is one view; another view is that mutual understanding will only grow on the basis of a common understanding of the past. That Jews have a right to a Jewish state is one view; another view is that states should be neutral with respect to ethnicity. Neither view is offensive in itself, and the very real problem that both sides in the conflict feel offended by the other side`s views cannot be solved by banning these views. |
