If the Lebanese army in the south is a joke, then so to is the U.N. resolution placing them there ... unless the international force who is placed in the South has muscle. Despite all of the bravado and some good intentions, I`ll be surprised if its mandate permits force for anything other than self defence! And if it does, I`ll be really surprised if any force is utilized. After all, we are not talking about taking on the Serbs. None of this is funny (as in a joke) to Israelies and the truly innocent civilians in Lebanon.
What all of this demonstrates, unless we are in for a very nice surprise, is that the U.N., who is largely responsible for the mess by simply letting the Hez-E-Bolas dig in, is morally, politically and pragmatically bankrupt. |
