| The minute all good options are off the table, it starts to become a quagmire. Olmert could have declared victory a few days after the blitzkrieg onslaught and claim to have sent a strong message to Hizballah and Lebanon but he didn`t, instead he chose to escalate. That was a costly mistake because he didn`t count on the resistance by Hizballah to be so effective to were over 100 IDf thugs were killed and 700 other Israeli`s injured--not to mention the barrage of rockets that continue to rain on the northern part of Israel. This is a classic case where both Hizballah and Israel had underestimated each other. First, Hizballah underestimated the response to their capture of IDF soldiers. Second, Olmert underestimated the stiff resistance Hizballah would put up. Now both parties are looking for a diplomatic way out but as we have learned from history, don`t underestimate ego and pride to get in the way. Just look at Iraq today or Lebanon 20 years ago, an exit strategy is not a given! |
