Women's groups protest court approval of Katsav plea bargainBy Ruth Sinai, Haaretz Correspondent Hundreds of women rallied Tuesday evening in Tel Aviv, to protest the High Court's endorsement of the plea bargain signed with former president Moshe Katsav over alleged sex crimes. The protesters called on Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to resign. They carried banners and chanted slogans denouncing the absence of rape charges in the deal, of which Katsav was also accused, but were left out of its final version. The protest was organized by 17 women's groups, and is the first in a series of demonstrations which are scheduled to take place in several locations across the country over the next few days. Rina Bar-Tal of the Israel Women's Network said that the protest expresses the public's general disappointment in the State Prosecution and the attorney general. "They deceived us and deprived the complainants of the legal platform they are entitled to," she said. Related articles: |
